Every Christmas we hear the bells ringing in malls and street corners and see the world famous red kettles hanging on the tripods. The Salvation Army is so much more than just a Christmas charity.
This Winter the Tic-Tac-Toe Charity Challenge honours The Salvation Army for their tireless efforts to make a difference in any life they touch.
The Beginnings of The Salvation Army
William Booth, a Methodist minister, and his wife Catherine began The Salvation Army in London, England, in 1865 taking their message of hope and humanitarian efforts to the homeless, hungry and poor of the White Chapel area.
The mission spread world-wide, often by emigrants who were touch by the works of the Salvation Army.
What The Salvation Army Wants to Change and Why
The Mission of the Salvation Army is to “share the love of Jesus Christ, meet human needs and be a transforming influence in the communities of our world.”
By holding to their core values of Salvation, Holiness and Intimacy with God, the Salvation Army serves in over 90 countries. Bringing the love of Christ through offering basic schooling, reading rooms, soup kitchens, counselling and relief aid to those who need it.
How You Can Help The Salvation Army
You can help the Salvation Army in simple ways by donating gently used clothing and household goods to their thrift stores. Donating food to their food banks, and some locations will even accept used vehicle donations.
Many of the programs run by The Salvation Army are volunteer driven, your time can be of just as much value as your money.
And, if you see those volunteers ringing their bells next to the red Christmas kettle, give what you can. Those donations are used throughout the year and not just at Christmas time.
